Fleas

Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis) & Dog Flea (Ctenocephalides canis)

The cat flea's primary host is the domestic cat, but this is also the primary flea infesting dogs in most of the world. The cat flea can also maintain its life cycle on other carnivores and on the Virginia opossum. Rabbits, rodents, ruminants and humans can be infested or bitten, but a population of cat fleas cannot be sustained by these aberrant hosts

The female cat flea lays her eggs on the host, but the eggs, once dry, have evolved to filter out of the haircoat of the host into the resting and sheltering area of the host.

The eggs hatch into larvae, which are negatively phototaxic, meaning that they hide from light in the substrate. Flea larvae feed on a variety of organic substances, but most importantly subsist on dried blood that is filtered out of the haircoat of the host after it is deposited there as adult flea fecal material. Thus the adult population on the host feeds the larval population in the host's environment.

Flea larvae metamorphose through 3 stages before spinning a cocoon and entering the pupal stage. The pupal stage varies greatly in length; the pre-emergent flea does not normally emerge as a young adult flea until the presence of a potential host is perceived by warmth, vibration or carbon dioxide production. Newly emerged fleas are stimulated to jump to a new host within seconds of emerging from the cocoon. The new flea begins feeding on host blood within minutes.

If fleas or ticks are a problem you need to do more than buy a new flea collar. If fleas are on your pet, you can be sure they are in your house. In fact, while adult fleas spend most of their time on animals, the eggs, larvae and pupae stages live in your carpeting, rugs, favorite chair, along baseboards, in floor cracks and other areas of the house and yard. They can be found wherever your pet goes.

To control fleas - and keep them from constantly re-infecting your pet and affecting your family - you must get rid of them on your pet and eliminate the fleas in your house and the outdoor areas your pets frequent.

Human Flea

(Pulex irritans)

Human parasites and head lice can be one of the most aggravating as well as embarrassing of all pests. There are several different types of human parasites including lice and mites.

The most common types of human lice are body lice, head lice, and crab or pubic lice. The most common types of mites are scabies mites, house mites, straw itch mites, and even chiggers. Typically, any kind of human parasite problem including lice and mites are considered to be a medical problem, with little or no cure other than good personnel hygiene and thorough washing of clothes, sheets, bedspreads and other infested items that have been in close personnel contact with the infected person.

Human parasites are only spread by personal contact with an infected person or contaminated clothing. Most of these parasites cannot live without their human host, therefore treatment of the home or building with pesticides is of little or no use. Personal treatment must be performed by trained medical personnel or at the very least by the use of the proper pharmaceutical products recommended by your doctor.

If you've got a problem with human parasites. We would suggest to contact your personal doctor or call your local county health clinic or more information.
